If there is one thing I learned in Paris this April, it's that the French really like their stairs. After touring the palace, we decided to head over to the Arc de Triomphe for what I was told would be a "nice view." Well, the view was incredible, but boy, you sure have to earn it.
The Approach: Going Underground
First thing’s first: do not try to dodge traffic to get to the monument. That traffic circle is like a demolition derby without the mud. We took the smart route and used the tunnel to walk right under the busy street. It pops you out right at the base of this massive piece of history. Seeing the names of the generals and the battles carved into the stone makes you realize just how much history is packed into one spot.
The Climb: 284 Reasons to Skip Leg Day
Then came the main event. There is no elevator for the casual tourist here—it’s all about the spiral staircase. We climbed almost 300 steps to get to the top. I told the kids it was good for their character; I think they just thought I was trying to wear them out so they’d sleep better. It’s a narrow squeeze, but once you break out onto that roof, you forget all about your barking dogs (that's dad-speak for feet, for the uninitiated).
"The 360-degree view of Paris from the top is probably the best in the city. You can see everything from the Eiffel Tower to the Sacré-Cœur."
A View Fit for a King (or a Tired Dad)
Standing up there at sunset was something else. You can see the twelve avenues branching out like a star—which is why they call it the Place de l'Étoile. We spent a good chunk of time just pointing out where we had been and where we still wanted to go. If you're heading to Paris, put this on your list—just maybe don't do it right after a long walking tour like we did!
