Ferry Rides, Golf Carts, and Craft Cocktails: A Day Trip to Bald Head Island
A day on Bald Head Island: navigating the ferry, renting a golf cart from Island Adventure, sipping craft cocktails at Jailhouse Provisions, visiting the sea turtle sanctuary, and drinks at Jules.
There is a distinct, immediate shift in pace the moment you step onto the ferry to Bald Head Island. With zero personal cars allowed on the island, the entire experience runs on golf carts, maritime forests, wide-open beaches, and some surprisingly elite craft cocktail programs.
If you're planning a day trip out from the mainland, here is how to handle the logistics, where to stop for a drink, and what to explore along the way.
Pro Tip #1: Advance Reservations Are Non-Negotiable
Two critical logistics rules will make or break your trip before you even leave the mainland:
- Reserve Your Ferry Tickets in Advance: Walk-up ticket buyers are placed in a standby line. Reserved ticket holders board first; if the boat hits capacity, walk-ups are stuck waiting around for the next departure.
- Reserve Your Golf Cart Early: You cannot easily explore the island on foot. Reserve your cart beforehand so it is waiting when you dock. We booked with Island Adventure Cart Rentals, and they had us checked in and rolling out within minutes.
Stop 1: Lunch & Libations at Jailhouse Provisions
After getting our wheels, our first official stop was Jailhouse Provisions for lunch and a round of drinks:
- Vieux Baldy ($20): Bulleit Rye Whiskey, B&B, Sweet Vermouth, Peychaud's, and Angostura Bitters. A rich, well-balanced spin on a classic cocktail.
- Lighthouse Lemon Mojito ($15): Ketel One, Agave, Fresh Lemon, and Fresh Mint. Crisp, bright, and perfect for a warm coastal afternoon.
Stop 2: Bourbon & Atmosphere at Bald Head Bottle
After finishing up at Jailhouse, we cruised the cart over to Bald Head Bottle. The atmosphere is great, and the drink menu delivers:
- Just Peachy: Bourbon, Peach Purée, Lemon, Lime, Mint, and Ginger Beer.
- The Pour: Finished the stop with a neat pour of E.H. Taylor small-batch bourbon before heading back out on the road.
Stop 3: Turtles, Coastal Views, and the Beach
Next, we took the cart on a tour of the island's natural highlights:
- Turtle Protection & Conservancy: Stopped by the local turtle sanctuary to check out the indoor slider tanks and the life-sized sea turtle sculpture.
- Historic Island Scenery: Cruised beneath the canopy of live oaks, past the island chapels, and around the base of Old Baldy Lighthouse.
- Shoreline Walk: Parked the cart at a public beach access and enjoyed a long, uncrowded walk right along the Atlantic surf.
Stop 4: Marina Views at Jules' & Will-o'-the-Wisp
We wrapped up the afternoon back near the harbor at Jules' Salty Siren and The Will-o'-the-Wisp along the marina basin.
Sitting on the open deck with a cold drink, watching the boats navigate the harbor, and taking in the salt air before catching our reserved ferry back to the mainland was the perfect close to one of coastal North Carolina's best day trips.
