Back to the Water — Reviving Our 2010 Tahoe Q4

After sitting untouched for eight years on the North Carolina coast, our 2010 Tahoe Q4 is getting a second life. Follow our DIY restoration journey as we tackle flat trailer tires, MerCruiser 3.0L MPI de-winterization, and outdrive servicing to get back on the Intracoastal Waterway by spring.

Boat Restoration MerCruiser 3.0 MPI Tahoe Q4

For eight years, our 2010 Tahoe Q4 sat parked on Oak Island, slowly disappearing into coastal weeds and salt air.

Before life got busy, this boat was the center of our summers. We spent years cruising Lake Jordan and Falls Lake, pulling the kids on tubes until sunset. When we bought our place down on Oak Island in 2016, we hauled the boat down to explore the Intracoastal Waterway. We made runs up to Southport to dock at Fishy Fishy, headed south past what is now Lone Rider Brewery, and cruised down toward Holden Beach.

Then life shifted. High school soccer, track meets, and packed weekend schedules took over. The older kids grew up on the water, but our youngest—now ten—has never truly experienced a family boat day. That realization was the turning point: it’s time to bring the Tahoe back to life.

Standing in the overgrown grass, my initial reaction was honest: this is going to take real sweat equity and a fair bit of cash. The yellow hull is dull, the aft sun pad is split from UV exposure, the trailer tires are flat and buried in the dirt, and the coastal humidity has left its mark. But underneath the grime is a solid boat with a MerCruiser 3.0L MPI powerplant waiting to run again.

The DIY Revival Plan

My goal is to handle the recovery and core mechanical work myself, calling in professional marine help only if we uncover major structural or internal engine failures. The target is clear: have the boat fully seaworthy and parked in dry-stack marina storage by next spring (April/May) for stress-free launch-and-retrieve days.

  • Phase 1: Trailer Mobility & Recovery
Extract the trailer from the weeds, replace the aged-out Goodyear Marathon ST tires, inspect the rusted surge brake actuator, and repack or replace wheel bearings.
  • Phase 2: Electrical & Engine Prep
Drop in a fresh marine battery, clean corroded ground lugs, pump out eight-year-old fuel, fog the cylinders, and confirm the MerCruiser 3.0L turns freely by hand.
  • Phase 3: Outdrive & Cooling Overhaul
Service the Alpha One Gen II outdrive, replace the raw water pump impeller, and inspect all rubber bellows for dry rot.
  • Phase 4: Cosmetics & Shakedown
Pressure-wash the fiberglass deck, address torn upholstery seams, and run a static wet test at the ramp.
