One of the small but annoying issues with my 1997 Porsche Boxster was the trunk lid — it wouldn’t stay up on its own. Turns out the gas struts had worn out. This was a quick and easy DIY fix that took less than 10 minutes to complete.
What I Did
The old struts popped off easily with a small flathead screwdriver. One tip I figured out the hard way: install the bottom end first. After doing the top first on one side, it was nearly impossible to snap the bottom into place. Once I reversed the order, it went right in.
This is a great beginner project if you’re starting to wrench on your own 986. Super satisfying and very functional.
